When the 2010 Catalyst study “Unwritten Rules: Why Doing a Good Job Might Not Be Enough” came out this year and boldly announced that “Reports of progress in advancement, compensation, and career satisfaction (for women) are at best overstated, at worst just plain wrong.” we knew it was time to unveil our newsletter and introduce our very successful program, “Producing Your Career.”

This month’s topic is PERCEPTION. We are showcasing very different views on perception—all of which we think will provide you with information and insight that will help you.

Perception – noun:

–the act or faculty of apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind; cognition; understanding.

–immediate or intuitive recognition or appreciation, as of moral, psychological, or aesthetic qualities; insight; intuition; discernment: an artist of rare perception.

–the result or product of perceiving, as distinguished from the act of perceiving; percept.

Let’s begin with a funny story— (or maybe not so!).  In the world of business, when you take over the corner office, you gain power over other people.  This power completely alters how you see yourself as well as how you see others and the world around you.

The newly minted President of a large insurance company threw a holiday bash for his employees at a swanky downtown hotel.  Surrounded by his inner circle, the President held court by regaling his troops with stories about his past successes in the industry.  While the employees hung on every word, his wife (who had been standing a distance away observing) called the President over.

Did she congratulate him on being such a brilliant conversationalist—or did she tell him it was time for them to leave since no one would really enjoy themselves at the party until he left?

Employees surrounding you at a party, laughing at your jokes and making you feel like the king of the jungle are doing exactly what employees do best:  playing to power.  But the President of the insurance company had lost his perspective.  Remember—the last time you’ll ever hear completely honest and undistorted information about what’s going on in your company is the day before you start the job.

Perspective Points—or how not to lose yours:

  • When you’re promoted to a management role, concentrate on keeping perspective.
  • Unearth the truth about your style and how others see you.
  • Find small ways to signal appreciation for your employee’s efforts.
  • Get advice from a personal board of directors—not a confidante from your staff.
  • Set boundaries when you mentor a person on the team.
  • When you manage outside offices, show up on-site unannounced.

Lanny Goodman, CEO of Management Technologies, Inc. has created a methodology with which entrepreneurs can regain control of their lives and fuel the growth and financial strength of their companies.

John Beeson

Do you actually know how people perceive you?  Do you understand how and why you get promoted?  John Beeson, Principal of Beeson Consulting, a management consulting firm specializing in succession planning, leadership development, executive assessment/coaching, and organization development/change, has just written The Unwritten Rules: The Six Skills You Need to Get Promoted to the Executive Level.

He argues that although the reasons behind promotions to C-suite positions in most companies appear to be either arbitrary or political, in most cases, there tend to be some important underlying factors regarding who does and does not get considered for such positions.

You can hear John discuss:

  1. what people can do to try to tease out useful feedback regarding where they stand vs. the key promotional factors
